I recently bought an upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Pro. Microsoft had a promotion (and as of yesterday it's still available) offering an upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for 30 USD to university students. I jumped on the offer and after paying for the upgrade and a physical copy of Windows 7 (which probably still hasn't shipped. Thanks Microsoft)
I installed it and it worked fine, saving everything I had on my hard drive in a Windows.old folder. While it was starting up, it took more than what I considered to be a normal amount of time, even allowing time since the hard drive was rather full, I did a hard reboot (just before it turned off, the loading bar showed up). It told me it wanted to do a system repair, so I let it, and it took several hours. After rebooting it still wanted to do a system repair, but I was fed up with it so, instead of throwing it out the window (as I suggest to many people) I got out my Vista disk and installed Vista on it.
Then I tried to install Windows 7 on my machine again, but since I was installing from a file it wouldn't let me format the hard drive. So after that finished, I installed Vista AGAIN and formatted the hard drive. I was content to wait for the disk to arrive in the mail, but I looked on my email, checked the site I bought it from, and learned that it hadn't even been shipped even though it was 5 days after I bought it. I haven't even been charged for the disk on my Visa yet. (I have been charged for the upgrade and the download however) So I installed Win7 again and it's worked so far.
I can't really complain because this is my fault.
